Buddy Reading
St. Nicholas’ Primary School ‘BUDDING READING’
The Professional Development Services to Teachers (PDST) and the National Induction Programme for Newly Qualified Teachers (NIPT) recommend paired reading as a methodology for teaching the English Curriculum.
It is suggested that pupils are paired with reading buddies from different class levels. This will offer pupils the provision of opportunities to practise the fluent reading behaviours in a meaningful context, as opposed to in isolation.
During this ‘Buddy Reading’, older children are paired with younger children. If children are too close in age, some readers might feel uncomfortable when reading aloud. There are benefits for the older and younger child here.
