May Assembly
It was another fabulous morning in our school to bring the month of May to a close. Our Assembly was jam packed with awards and announcements.
Among the excitement, we got to see more children get awarded for their modelling of the school's core values, as well as see a video made by the juniors on what the core values are all about.
More superstars were celebrated for their efforts in Accelerated Reading, as well as word millionaires. Ms. Skelly's class have claimed the trophy for the best average amount of time spent reading per day.
New Active Agents were recognised too.

Talk for Writing
Some of our teachers had a wonderful experience attending the Talk for Writing seminar in Belfast recently, hosted by Jamie Thomas and the man behind it all, Pie Corbett himself. A very enlightening and fascinating look into the area of genre writing for Literacy.

The Sensory Garden
Students have been working hard to get our Sensory Garden up and running.
It is located just outside the back doors to our school next to Ms. Henry's office. We have lavender, rosemary and thyme plants. We also have some lovely flowers such as geraniums and pansies. We also planted a cherry blossom tree and hazelnut tree as part of our Sensory Garden. |
April/May Assembly
Another exciting Friday morning as we hosted our latest assembly as the month of May began for us.
We opened with a prayer, including Room 9 saying the Hail Mary in Italian for the entire school. One of our students showed off his excellent creation of a robot made from LEGO. Another multitude of students received certificates. Some were honoured for showing the core values. Others were celebrated for their work in Accelerated Reading. Word millionaires and class millionaires were announced. The latest class for the highest average reading time is Ms. Bagnall's class. The student council shared a video they compiled of the latest news from every class in the school. Winners of two competitions from Book Week were revealed (one for the closest guess of how many AR books are in the school. Another for the best bookmark).
Among other things, it was a lovely part of our morning as we enter the week off in May!

Nurture Room
Liam Foley opened our nurture room at 12pm today.
We are delighted to have this facility as part of our school for those who need it. Some of the children that use it talked about its benefits. This is a link that discusses how nurture rooms are boosting pupil wellbeing. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/education/nurture-rooms-how-schools-are-boosting-pupils-wellbeing-1.4094188 |

Stylish Staff of St. Nicholas'
A new initiative has begun in the school this week.
Staff gear presenting the crest and colours of our school have become available for teachers, SNAs and other faculty to wear, if they choose. We are proud to represent our school on and off the school grounds, as well as hoping to model a sense of identity and unity to those around us, young and old. A big thank you to PLAYR-FIT for kitting us out. |
Easter Assembly
The assemblies is St. Nicholas seem to get more and more jam packed every time. We had so much to enjoy and celebrate on the last day before the holidays. We had a multitude of Core Value certificate winners, plenty of AR Superstars, a whole bunch of AR Millionaires, Ms. Skelly's won the AR trophy and a winner of a Smyth's voucher by one of the AR Superstars.
We also got to celebrate Laura Maguire and Úna Moynihan's achievements in raising a hefty amount of money for My Canine Companion in association with our therapy dog, Tina. We commended some Active Agents in our school, Archie received a certificate for his achievements in Scratch and some of Mr. Regan's class got to perform Room on a Broom for everybody.
Not only that, but we had the biggest Easter raffle to date with so many prizes given away. Well done to all and a big thanks to everyone in the community and school who helped make it all possible.
Have a great Easter, everyone!

Longwood's Got Talent 2024
We had the absolute joy in getting to spend a full two and a half hours today watching the immense talent that's present in our school. This year's talent show was certainly one to remember. We had all sorts of performances; plenty of singing, dancing and gymnastics. We also got the chance to hear some poetry, see some impressive rubix cube skills and witness some super piano and drum playing. This talent show had it all!
A massive "Well done!" to everyone involved. You did your class and school proud. A particular congratulations to those who placed in the top three, as well as our People's Choice Award winner. A special thanks from Mr. Regan to his co-host, who helped him throughout the show in announcing the acts on the day.

Seachtain na Gaeilge
Bhíomar an-ghnóthach an Aoine seo caite i Scoil San Nioclás. Chaitheamar an maidin sa halla ag taispeáint a lán rudaí, ó rince go hamhráin. Bhí sé go hiontach. Comhghairdeas le gach duine. Ag an deireadh, rinne na daltaí agus na múinteoirí an rince "An Dreoilín" agus "Shoe the Donkey". Lá álainn a bhí ann!
(We were very busy last Friday in St. Nicholas Primary School. We spent the morning in the hall showing a lot of things, from dance to songs. It was excellent. Congratulations to everyone. At the end, the students and teachers did the dance "An Dreoilín" and "Shoe the Donkey". It was a lovely day!)

Say "Hello!" to Jerry
It is with great excitement that we can inform you all that our school has received another Therapy Pup. His name is Jerry and he arrived to school today.
He is 16 weeks old and he's a Golden Retriever. We are in such a lucky position to now have two Therapy pups for our school. Tina and Jerry will train together over the next two years and will work as part of our team for many years to come. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Board of Management, our staff members and the Longwood community for supporting this initiative. |
Traditional Irish Music
The boys and girls of St. Nicholas' Primary School were blessed with a visit from students of Coláiste Clavin this morning as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge.
We got to watch and listen to a fabulous performance by their Trad Group and teachers, from uilinn pipe solos to dance alongs. It was immense fun. It was great to see some of our past pupils again in the school. The level of talent and the range of instruments played was very inspirational to watch. A big thank you for taking the time to perform for us! |
Easter Raffle
Our Easter Raffle will began today and will run until Friday 22nd March.
Each classroom will have two Easter eggs to raffle off. During assembly on the 22nd March, three Easter Hampers, along with a number of other spot prizes, will be raffled. Lots to be won this year! Tickets will be sold here in the school each day for the next two weeks. One line of tickets costs €1. Please consider supporting our fundraising event. |
World Book Day
During a short and busy week full of Seachtain na Gaeilge and Mother's Day activities, our school took the time to celebrate World Book Day.
Students (and teachers) came to school dressed in a whole array of awesome costumes based on book characters.
There were many fun and exciting things done in the classrooms, as well as the best dressed being picked from each room. The finalists were sent to Room 5, where one lucky child managed to win a Smyth's voucher.

Altar Serving
Well done to all our readers and Altar Servers who supported Fr. Louis during Mass services at the weekend. You made us so proud here in school.
Due to the success of these masses more children have been inspired to join our Parishes’ Religious Teams today.
If any other children would like to support their parish in this way please let Ms. Coburn know. A commitment of once a month is all they need.

Badminton
Badminton started on Tuesday February 6th during lunchtime for children from 3rd - 6th classes. Over 60 children showed up to play! To give everyone a better chance to play some rallies and try to become the King or Queen of the Castle, it was decided to split the children up. Students in 3rd & 4th class are now playing at lunchtimes on Mondays and 5th & 6th class play on Tuesdays. It is amazing to see children of all standards and to see them enjoying themselves each week. New students are always welcome!
Meath County Council Fire and Rescue Service Fire Safety Art competition
Congratulations to the overall winner of the Meath County Council Fire and Rescue Service Fire Safety Art competition from Room 13 in our very own St. Nicholas' Primary School. Not only that, but another student in our school from Room 11 was placed as a runner up. We were delighted to welcome members of the Fire and Rescue Service to our school to congratulate the students and to award our school a cheque for €500. This money will play a big part in our current fundraising for the school.
January Assembly
There was plenty to celebrate and enjoy at our first assembly of 2024. We were gifted with a performance of What a Wonderful World by Ms. Dolan's class, performed using sign language. The choir gave us a sample of what they'll be singing at the Peace Proms in the RDS on Saturday 3rd February. More certificates were handed out to a fresh bunch of AR Superstars. Our Student Council received their badges, to be worn with pride for the rest of the year. Our core values were celebrated in some of the students of the school. Ms Whyte's class have taken on the lead of "most minutes read per day". Congratulations to all!

Tina Update
It seems our resident pooch is settling in just fine as we hit the Christmas holidays. She's been going through a rigorous training schedule, as well as getting the chance to meet the boys and girls of the school. The children of Room 4 have taken a real shine to her in these first few weeks.

Say Hello to Tina
Our new therapy dog Tina arrived at school on Thursday 7th December to much fanfare and excitement. The children (and staff!!) were giddy with delight when our new canine friend appeared.
Tina is a beautiful Golden Doodle who has already garnered celebrity status in St. Nicholas. She has both a lovely sweet face and a lovely sweet personality. Everyone in school is anxiously awaiting their turn to meet Tina and we look forward to seeing her around our school every day. No doubt she is a marvellous addition to our school community and we are very lucky to have her on the team! She is settling in well to her new surroundings. When not working during the school day, she relaxes in her luxurious accommodation in the Principal's office.......lucky Ms. Henry! Lámh is a manual sign system used by children and adults with intellectual disability and communication needs in Ireland.
In an effort to encourage the use of Lámh sign language at a whole school level, we will be uploading a "Lámh sign of the week" video here on our website every Monday throughout the school year. You will find all the videos in our "Parents Area" in the Lámh section. Please check in every Monday and encourage your family to practise the sign throughout the week. The school had a wonderful morning in school as we got ready for the midterm break. There's evidence to hint that the staff had even more fun than the pupils.
Our Witches/Wizards Walk raised approximately €1600. Thank you so much for your generous donations. A huge thank you to the Parents Association who organised goody bags for the children after our sponsored walk.

Maths Week 2023
There were lots of things happening in St. Nicholas last week to mark Maths Week 2023. We had plenty of activities to keep us busy and the children showed off their maths skills with great enthusiasm!
During the week, all classes were to be seen out and about completing maths trails, shape hunts and outdoor maths activities. When the weather was less than fine we made use of our lovely big building and the buzz of fun and collaborative work moved indoors. Some of the senior children gave demos to the younger classes which were thoroughly enjoyed. Many of the senior children also competed in a very competitive quiz - well done to the joint winners. It was wonderful to see the children in their classrooms, on the corridors and in the PE hall, working together with gusto!
Among the super contributions by the children to Maths Week, there were projects to be seen, newly invented maths games to be played, and Powerpoint presentations to be enjoyed. A special well done to Emmet Collins on his fantastic presentation about building bird boxes!
Many of the children embraced the challenge to find ways they use maths in their everyday lives. These children shared some very interesting and entertaining photos and videos with their teachers and classes. We loved seeing the children using maths at home and even on the farm!

Visit from Liam Foley
We were delighted to be joined by Liam Foley during our assembly on Friday this week. Liam won two gold medals for the Irish Down's Syndrome Team in the Special Olympics this year for Athletics. We're all so proud of him and a big thank you for spending the time to come and see us in St. Nicholas.
School Values
As you may remember from last year, we began to recognise the modelling of the school's four core values (Trust, Hope, Respect and Care) by the students in our school. We kicked off our first assembly by continuing that tradition for the 23/24 school year with our first round of certificates. Congratulations to the children and keep up the good work!
Off to a Winning Start!
The girls team for 2023/2024 had a very successful first match of the year, playing against St. Joseph's PS in Navan in the first round of the Cumann na mBunscoil. They can be very proud of their 21 point winning margin. A big well done to the team and their coaches. Their next match is against Gaelscoil an Bhradáin Feasa in Longwood on Wednesday 20th September.
