Toe by Toe at Home
Toe by Toe is a highly structured phonics-based reading manual designed to assist children who struggle with reading. It simply takes 10 minutes at least 5 days a week, and you'll notice an immediate boost in your child's reading confidence. It can be used by parents or by teachers; you don’t need to be a trained teacher to help a child read with Toe by Toe.
To date, your child has received a one-to-one intervention in school with Toe by Toe for at least 8 weeks on a daily basis. Your child is displaying great progression in their reading skills. As a result, we are now requesting home support to continue the great work already achieved by your child in school.
As of (date) we will send home your child’s Toe by Toe to be completed at home at least 5 times a week for 10 mins.

Nonsense Words
What may be confusing for parents when initially using the manual for the first time is the use of "toe-by-toe nonsensical" words. These words are exactly as described—"nonsense – ‘Nonsense Words’. They are not real words. They are artificial words, deliberately created by Keda Cowling, forcing students to focus on the essential ‘decoding task' that Toe by Toe strives to achieve. Why do we use Toe by Toe Nonsense Words? Quite simply because struggling readers are smart! And need to stop guessing! and DECODE!
One of the reasons reading difficulties are not identified early is that children often adopt coping or avoiding strategies. These strategies disguise the fact that they struggle to read fluently. Guessing a word is one of the first coping strategies that many struggling readers turn to.
If you are unsure of these nonsense words, we have provided a link below. You will be able to hear the sounds, and then you will be more aware if your child is decoding the sounds correctly. This link below will provide you with the sounds that are covered on pages 13, 15, 16, 17, 31, 33, 65, 67, 75, 76, 77, 85, 95, 97, 115, 121, 135, 149, 155, 173, 185, 191, 197, 221, 227.
